Let Your Smile Shine

Are you concerned about the colour of your teeth? If so, you're not alone. Many people notice their teeth aren't as bright as they used to be. In fact, this is a normal process of aging, with teeth becoming darker or taking on a yellow or brownish hue due to a variety of factors, including:

  • The consumption of heavily pigmented foods and beverages such as red wine and coffee
  • Lifestyle habits, most notably cigarette smoking
  • Poor oral hygiene habits over time
  • Dental accidents or trauma

If you're looking to brighten the appearance of your smile, Zoom! Teeth Whitening from Dr. Seddon and his team can help you to remove stains and rapidly brighten your smile in just one office visit.

If you'd prefer to whiten your teeth at home, Oceanfront Dental can fit you for custom whitening trays, and provide you with detailed instructions and professional strength whitening gel so that you can achieve a brighter smile in the comfort of your own home.

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Having a brighter smile can boost your confidence and self-esteem. This could actually have an impact on your oral health in ways you might not expect.

Results from teeth whitening that make you proud of your smile could, in turn, inspire you to better maintain your oral hygiene routine at home, and attend regular dental appointments for professional cleaning. Meaning that, teeth whitening could be your first step in achieving a healthier smile.

How Teeth Whitening Works

At our Vancouver dental clinic, we use a peroxide-based gel in teeth whitening treatments. This gel breaks down stain molecules, which can result in a whiter, brighter-looking smile. The peroxide gel is non-toxic, non-allergenic, and very safe to use.

Whether you choose in-office or take-home teeth whitening, we are here to guide you through the process to help ensure the best possible results for your smile.

Zoom! In-Office Teeth Whitening

Dr. Seddon and his team are proud to offer patients Zoom! teeth whitening treatments as a safe and effective way to reduce staining and discolouration in as little as 45 minutes. Zoom! uses a combination of whitening gel and LED technology to help minimize post treatment tooth sensitivity that is common with many teeth whitening systems, while maximizing results.

Personalized Take-Home Teeth Whitening

You can also achieve a whiter and brighter smile at home by following our at-home whitening process. If you choose the take-home whitening option, we make impressions of your mouth and create custom whitening trays. At home you will simply apply a whitening gel to your custom-fitted trays and wear them according to the directions for use. At the end of the treatment period, you should notice that your teeth appear visibly whiter.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening at Oceanfront Dental

  • Am I a candidate for teeth whitening?

If your teeth are discoloured due to stains from smoking, drinking highly pigmented beverages, or other lifestyle factors, teeth whitening at Oceanfront Dental may provide results ranging from 2-8 shades lighter.

If your oral health is generally good, you are likely a good candidate for teeth whitening. That said, if you have older dental restorations that are stained, or teeth with interior staining, professional teeth whitening may not give you the results you are hoping for.

Speak to our team to find out if teeth whitening could help you achieve the brighter smile you are hoping for.

  • How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?

The effects of teeth whitening are not permanent. Diet and lifestyle choices will play a significant role in how long your teeth stay white. Beverages such as coffee and wine, and certain foods, such as those that contain turmeric, can stain the teeth.

Maintaining a diligent oral hygiene routine and being mindful of which foods and beverages you consume can help to keep your teeth whiter for longer. Many patients choose to have whitening touch-ups done after about a year or so in order to sustain a brighter-looking smile.

  • Does insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?

Most dental insurance policies do not cover the cost of teeth whitening treatments.

  • Does teeth whitening make teeth more sensitive?

Sensitivity can be a short-term side effect of teeth whitening. At Oceanfront Dental, Dr. Seddon and his team are proud to offer Zoom! in-office teeth whitening, which uses LED to help minimize post-treatment tooth sensitivity.

Whether you choose in-office or at-home whitening, any increased sensitivity that you experience should fade away within a few days. Many patients find that using anti-sensitivity toothpaste before treatment, and for about two weeks after treatment, is helpful.

  • Do teeth whitening products work on all stains?

Different types of stains react differently to the whitening process. Typically, brown, and yellow-coloured stains respond best to these treatments, whereas other stains may not respond to whitening treatments at all.

If having a whiter smile is important to you but your teeth have non-responsive stains, your dentist may recommend other cosmetic treatments such as dental crowns or veneers that may be a better fit for you.

  • Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?

Unfortunately not. Teeth whitening only works on natural teeth and will not work on existing dental restorations such as dental crowns or veneers.

If crowns or veneers are part of your treatment plan, teeth whitening should take place before you receive your dental restorations.

  • Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?

When used under the supervision of a qualified dentist, teeth whitening is very unlikely to damage your dental enamel. Always consult with your dentist to ensure you are using any teeth whitening products safely. If you experience any pain, sensitivity, or discomfort anywhere in your mouth, let your dentist know right away. Even if it’s not related to whitening, they will be able to help.
