Clean your Smile

oral systemic connection (1)The oral-systemic link is hard to discount with periodontal disease being associated with other diseases.

Heart Disease

Research indicates that there is an association between gum disease and heart disease, and while the relationship hasn’t yet been proven, studies show there is a link between periodontitis and heart disease. If you already have a heart condition, periodontitis can exacerbate the problem.

Diabetes

Diabetics run a higher risk when it comes to periodontal disease. Periodontitis is considered a complication of the disease. People who have uncontrolled diabetes are in the high-risk category. A periodontist will tell you that the relationship goes both ways as periodontal disease could make it harder to control blood sugar levels. Severe gum disease can also increase blood sugar putting the diabetic at risk.

Stroke

Scientists have discovered a relationship between stroke and periodontitis. People who were diagnosed with cerebrovascular ischemia were more likely to suffer from gum disease and other oral infections.

Osteoporosis

Studies suggest that there is a link between jawbone loss and osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can lead to tooth loss as the bone density that supports your teeth may decrease. Ocean Front Dental recommends gum reshaping if you are suffering from osteoporosis or gum disease.

Respiratory Disease

According to Ocean Front Dental, bacteria, plaque, and tartar can travel to the lungs. This can cause pneumonia and other respiratory diseases, especially in patients who suffer from gum disease.

Cancer

Research indicates that men who have periodontal disease are 49 percent more likely to develop kidney cancer, with 54 percent are more apt to contract pancreatic cancer. 30 percent of men who have gum disease are also more likely to suffer from blood cancer.

Healthy teeth and gums are vital for overall health and with more systemic health research being conducted, there could be additional links discovered in the very near future.

Laser Dentistry

We at Oceanfront Dental pride ourselves on the incredible technology we have in the office. Dr. Seddon enjoys the use of a portable diode laser for cosmetic, surgical, and prosthodontic procedures that provides minimal discomfort and swelling. He also uses an Erbium Yag laser for various gum treatments to disinfect pockets and bring your tissues back to health.

Laser dentistry is the modern way to clean your smile and with the laser dental clinic in Vancouver, you can have the perfect smile using laser treatment for teeth cleaning. A laser dental clinic can also help treat gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Ocean Front Dental recommends laser dentistry if you are in the early stages of gum disease. This requires deep cleaning of the four quadrants in your mouth. After your gums are numbed, Dr. Seddon will clean the roots of the teeth just below your gum line to remove plaque and tartar, also known as calculus. Called root planing and scaling this laser treatment for teeth cleaning can help reduce the risk of gingivitis and the more serious periodontal disease. Root planing and scaling stop infection from progressing. However, laser treatment for teeth cleaning cannot reverse bone or collagen loss. Bacteria can still collect allowing germs and bacteria to attack again. If you have serious periodontal disease, you may need laser gum surgery for the perfect smile.

Laser dentistry is also used for:

Tooth decay-Dentists use laser to remove tooth decay and to prepare the enamel for filling
Gum disease-Lasers can be used to reshape your gums and to remove bacteria during a root canal therapy procedure
Lesion Removal and Biopsy-Dental lasers can also be used to remove tissue. Known as a biopsy the tissue is removed so that it can be checked for cancer. Lasers can also be used to relieve canker sore pain and to remove mouth lesions

Compared to traditional dental drills, lasers for teeth cleaning will cause less pain and may reduce the need for anesthetic. Lasers for teeth cleaning can also help reduce dental anxiety and dental fear. Laser dentistry can also minimize swelling and bleeding and will help preserve the healthy structure of the tooth.

Oral Exams & Digital X-Rays

Comprehensive oral exams enable Dr. Seddon to take a good look at your teeth, gums, and other areas of your mouth to see if there are any problems. These exams can help Dr. Seddon identify cavities, the buildup of plaque, gum disease, and many other issues in order to provide you with an accurate diagnosis. Dr. Seddon recommends at least two oral exams each year.

Dental x-rays are often a standard part of an oral exam, and our practice utilizes digital x-ray technology to make the process as quick and convenient as possible. Digital x-rays can be viewed almost instantaneously, and do not require developing chemicals that may be harmful to the environment. Plus, they offer precise and detailed images of your oral anatomy while reducing radiation exposure by up to 90 percent when compared to traditional film x-rays.

Oral Cancer Screening

Regular oral cancer screenings are the keys to early detection and treatment for a condition that can have serious, even fatal consequences. With early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer, studies have indicated the chances of survival to be approximately 80 to 90 percent. Dr. Seddon can perform these quick and painless oral cancer screenings as part of your regular oral exam here at our practice. It’s very important to remember that early warning signs of oral cancer may not be noticeable to you in the early stages, which makes it even more critical to have these routine screenings. Dr. Seddon recommends at least one per year for patients who do not consume alcohol or tobacco products, and at least two each year for those who do consume these products.

Dental Cleanings

A teeth cleaning is often paired with your regular oral exam here at the practice of Dr.Nick Seddon. A professional dental cleaning can thoroughly clean your teeth and reach areas that a conventional toothbrush can’t access. These procedures can remove bacteria and plaque buildup, reducing the potential for developing gum disease, cavities, and other problems. Plus, dental cleanings can give your teeth a refreshing polish and provide you with a brand new reason to smile!

Dr. Seddon recommends at least two dental cleanings each year to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Periodontics (Oral Care)

Dr. Seddon offers advanced periodontal (gum care) options to treat gum disease and successfully renew the health of your gums. Gum disease affects millions of Americans, many of whom may not even be aware they have it. Untreated gum infections can lead to gum recession, bleeding gums, tooth movement, tooth loss, and even risks to your overall health. Dr. Seddon can treat gum disease with non-surgical techniques designed to remove pockets of bacteria and disinfect the gums. He can also utilize state-of-the-art laser dentistry to help minimize discomfort, enhance precision, and reduce recovery time.

In addition to gum disease treatment, Dr. Seddon offers periodontal procedures such as non-surgical “gummy smile” rejuvenation, which uses laser techniques to remove excess gum tissue and create better symmetry and balance between the gums and teeth.
